Magic VLAN

Use Case

Classify and dynamically assign devices(MAC) into Device-Type VLANs
4 supported Device-Types today
  • Data

  • Voice

  • Video

  • IOT

Customer Input

Per interface specify Device-Type-VLAN for the different Device-Types
  • up to 4 VLANS per Device-Type
global user defined MAC to Device-Type configuration
  • up to 8 mappings
global user defined "string" to Device-Type configuration
  • up to 16, 16byte mappings

  • preconfigured with Cisco Phone CDP string

Design

MAC-VLAN mapping is how we classify Device-Types
  • up to 8 MAC-VLAN mappings per port
Classification Order
  • user MAC

  • user string in CDP description

  • user string in LLDP description

  • LLDP capability check

  • Map to Data VLAN

Interoperability

If MAC-VLAN conflicts with NAC then NAC wins
Evaluate support for Discard-TAG option
  • Discard TAG discards the VLAN tag on the incoming traffic and reclassifies based on classification order
apply Device-Type specific QoS template to Device-Type VLAN
  • Needs QoS Template support
LLDP - QoS

Troubleshooting

  • standard

  • trace
